Eva foam

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam is a material with a relatively high density. In contrast to other types of foam, the air cells are not or hardly visible in the material and it feels almost rubbery. This foam also does not absorb water and is UV resistant.

Applications

The field of application of EVA foam is diverse. Because the material can be processed in many ways, the material is often found in the production of costumes and props. The material can also be used in the form of floor tiles for protection and soundproofing or even as wall decoration. Finally, the material can be found in "rough" model building and models as a base, for example.

Design considerations

Foam has a relatively large cut, as a rule of thumb the thicker the material the wider the cut. Small details (less than 5mm) should be avoided for this reason.

Laser cutting

The material retains a clean cut without tarnishing after laser cutting, the cut is slightly darker than the material. The foam is a bit stretchy, we try to load the material into the laser as carefully as possible without tension, but it may be that a part that is "relaxed" deviates a little from the actual size. Engravings are relatively deep and feel hard, as if the material is melted.

Double-sided adhesive foil is not possible. Cut parts can have "pits" and black backlash from the laser bed on the underside of the material, this can be prevented by protective foil.

Post-processing

EVA foam can be processed with a knife, dremel or hot knife after laser cutting. The foam can also be painted, sanded, shaped or glued with contact adhesive.

Appearance

EVA feels soft (for comparison, as soft as a yoga mat) and is white in color. The cut is slightly darker than the material. The material can be easily bent. The color of EVA foam is white-gray.
