Polyacetaal (Delrin) (POM)
Polyacetal, also known as Polyoxymethylene, POM and under the brand name Delrin is a hard plastic with a milky white appearance. The plastic is very popular in the industrial sector because it is wear-resistant and has a low coefficient of friction.
Applications
The field of application of polyacetal is quite specific, the material is mainly found in (small) mechanical engineering, installation construction and other low-load industrial fields.
Design considerations
In general, this material is only cut, because line and surface engravings are almost invisible. Due to the production process, the material may warp slightly. This is also the case with thin or long strips.
Laser cutting
The cut is tight, clean and the same color as the material. Engraving areas and lines have the same color as the material. Around the cut there is smoke deposit and a very small melting edge, this can be prevented on both sides with protective foil.
Post-processing
Due to the chemical structure of polyacetal, almost all adhesives do not adhere to the material. Fastening is almost only possible with bolts and screws. However, the material can be sawn, sanded, milled and drilled to perfection.
To give line and surface engravings a greater contrast, they can be filled with paint (color fill). When the excess paint is then removed, the paint remains in the grooves.
Appearance
The material is opal in nature, the thinner variants more so than the thicker ones. Engraving areas and lines are almost invisible and there may be small scratches on the material because the material is produced without protective film. Without protective film there is a grainy amount of smoke buildup on the top and bottom.
