How do I create a vector file ready for laser cutting?

Hoe maak ik een vector bestand dat klaar is om te lasersnijden? - Het Laser Lokaal

What is a vector file?

A vector file is a type of digital file that uses mathematical formulas to represent shapes, lines, and curves. Unlike raster images — which are made up of pixels with color information — a vector file consists of objects that are scalable without any loss of quality. This means you can enlarge or reduce a vector file to any size without it becoming blurry or grainy.

For laser cutting, a vector file is essential because the laser operates based on the lines in the file. These lines precisely indicate where the laser should cut or engrave. Typical file types that contain vector information include .EPS, .SVG, .DXF, .AI, and .PDF (if saved correctly).

Without a drawing, you can of course get a cost estimate, check out our cost estimation tool for more information.

In short: a vector file is the blueprint for a perfect cutting result. It ensures that the machine knows exactly where and how to cut – with millimeter precision.

How do I create or obtain a vector file?

There are several ways to create or obtain a vector file, depending on your experience and the software you use. It is important to consider the drawing rules regardless of which option you choose. Here are the most common options listed:

1. Create a vector file yourself

If you are skilled with design software, you can create a vector file yourself. Some commonly used programs are:

  • Adobe Illustrator (.AI, .SVG, .PDF) – Professional software for graphic design.

  • Inkscape (.SVG, .DXF) – Free alternative with many features.

  • CorelDRAW (.CDR, .DXF) – Popular among technical draftsmen and designers.

  • AutoCAD (.DXF) – Mainly used for technical designs and working drawings.

When designing, it is important to work only with lines and shapes – no photos or shadows. The lines in the file literally indicate where the laser should cut or engrave.

2.Convert an existing file to vector

Do you already have a logo or image, but it's not yet a vector file? Then you can convert it:

  • In Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape, you can “trace” an image to create vector lines.

  • There are also online tools, such as Vectorizer or Autotracer, which allow you to automatically convert a raster image (like a .JPG or .PNG) into a vector file. Note: the quality of these conversions is not always perfect for laser cutting and may require some post-processing.

3.Engage a Designer

Do you lack experience with design software or want to ensure that the file is technically well-constructed? On websites like Fiverr or Upwork, thousands of designers are active who can quickly and cost-effectively create a vector file that meets the drawing rules. . Many providers offer support and design services, so your file is ready to be cut immediately.
