Brown MDF

What is this material?Brown MDF is a fibreboard made of compressed wood fibres. It has no grain direction, does not splinter like solid wood, and has a smooth to slightly fibrous brown surface, depending on the panel thickness. The 1 and 2 mm panels feel very smooth; from 3 mm onwards, the fibre structure is slightly more palpable.

What is it suitable for?A versatile and affordable choice for models, prototypes, packaging, decorative panels, artworks, and interior components, especially when the surface is to be painted later.

When designing.Because MDF has no grain direction, you can orient parts freely on the panel. Avoid very narrow shapes under load and do not use it for load-bearing structures or applications in a humid environment.

When laser cutting and engraving.Laser cutting results in a dark brown to black edge, and engravings become dark brown. Smoke residue can occur on both sides around cuts and engravings; protective film can limit this residue on the surface. For 6 and 9 mm, the cut edge may release a small amount of soot.

Finishing and maintenance.Brown MDF can be sanded, glued, and painted. The material readily absorbs moisture, which often requires multiple primer coats when painting. Use it dry and indoors.
