Schuim kiezen voor vorm, bescherming en presentatie
Zacht, hard of vormvast
Foam materials are popular materials in the world of laser cutting. Many types of foam can be cut including EVA foam, PE foam, XPS (polystyrene foam) foam and many other types. The different types of foam are used for different purposes, for example PE foam is often used for protections and packaging, and EVA foam for (light) constructive purpose such as models.
When cutting industrial foam, the advantages of a laser cutter compared to other cutting tools are clear. Although the traditional cutter exerts strong pressure on the foam, resulting in material deformation and unclean cutting edges, the laser can create the finest contours thanks to precise and contactless cutting.
Advantages of laser cutting foam
-Precision: With a laser beam of only ~0,5 mm, complex shapes can be easily cut. It is important to note that some foams have a larger cut.
- Speed: Laser cutting machines are faster than other methods such as water cutting. Foam plates are cut at average speeds of several centimeters per second.
- Flexibility: EVA and PE are an elastomer, which means that it is flexible and can be formed in different forms, even after laser cutting.
- Finishing: The laser cutting process results in perfectly finished edges to the material.
- Versatility: Both EVA and PE foam can be used for many different applications, from packaging foam to technical seals.
- Foam materials can be cut as well as engraved.
(Possible) disadvantages of foam laser cutting:
-Accuracy: Although laser cutting is very accurate, it can still show abnormalities, especially in complex designs. The main problem is that the cut is not fully straight.
-Cut edges: Although the cutting edges are tight, they can be darker than the original material.
-Relaxability: EVA foam is stretchable, which can lead to small deviations in the final size of the component, especially on large surface.
Adhesive film: for self-adhesive parts, adhesive foil may be applied when this option is available with the chosen foam.
-Outside use: EVA foam is not suitable for outdoor use, PE foam is limited for outdoor use.
-Color: The available colours are limited for most foams.
