Multiplex, MDF en hout vergelijken
Multiplex of MDF?
Multiplex laat de houtlagen en nerf zien en is sterk in verhouding tot het gewicht. MDF heeft een rustige, egale opbouw en is prettig voor prototypes, displays en onderdelen zonder zichtbare houtnerf.
Berken, linden of populieren?
Wood and wood-based sheet materials are widely usable for laser cutting. From strong birch plywood parts and light flat packs from poplar plywood to smooth MDF for prototypes and displays: Each sheet has its own appearance, structure and cutting result.
In this collection you can compare plywood, MDF, veneered plates, hardboard and fibre plates. Looking for plywood only, check out the separate collection Plywood laser cutting.
Laser cutting wood
When laser cutting, the laser follows exactly the vector lines in your file. This allows straight lines, curves, recesses, small holes and repeatable connections to be combined within one design. The operation is contactless: the material does not need to be touched with a milling or saw and parts from the same drawing can be accurately repeated.
The laser discolours the cutting edge dark brown to almost black. How strong this discoloration and possible smoke attack are, depends on wood type, adhesive layers, thickness and plate construction. A natural plate can also differ in grain, colour, nustling and minor repairs.
Compare plywood, MDF and other wood panels
Plywood
Plywood consists of cross-glued veneer layers. It is strong and relatively dimensionally stable, while the layered edge remains visible. Birch plywood is rigid and fine of surface. Poplar plywood is lighter and softer. Basswood plywood has a quiet, light nerve and is pleasant for fine visual work. Okoume has a warmer colour and a more natural plate drawing. Read Also Choose MDF or plywood and compare birch, poplar or linden.
MDF
MDF is homogeneously constructed and has no visible grain or veneer layers. It is a practical choice for prototypes, molds, displays and parts that will be finished later. The cutting edge becomes darker and is evener than with many plywood species. MDF is heavier than poplar plywood and not intended for prolonged moisture load.
Veneer, hardboard and fibre sheets
Finished plates combine a decorative wood layer with a plate core. Hardboard is thin, compact and especially functional. Recycled and biobased fibre sheets each have their own fibre image, density and scope. Therefore, always look at the information on the individual material page.
Engraving wood within a laser cutting command
Cutting lines can be combined in the same file with line engraving and area engraving. A line engraving follows a vector line; a area engraving fills a closed form. The colour and contrast vary by type of wood. On light, quiet plates an engraving is usually clearer than on dark or strongly drawn wood. View the difference between cutting, line engraving and area engraving.
What are you paying attention to in your design?
- Actual sheet thickness: sheet material has thickness tolerance. Test critical slots, press passes and finger connections first in the selected material.
- Cut width: The laser takes away material. The exact cutting width varies by material and thickness.
- Diff direction: narrow parts can be more vulnerable across the vein. Please indicate an important direction when determining the product.
- Little details: sharp inner angles, thin bridges and small holes react differently per plate type. A trial part prevents surprises.
- Surface: natural variation, light smoke attack and a dark cutting edge belong to laser cut wood.
Common Applications
Wood and MDF are used for technical components, construction kits, models, models, displays, presentation material, packaging parts, molds and flat interior elements. We focus on the precise production of the cutting: from one test part to a recurring series.
