Cork

What is this material? Cork is a lightweight, porous, and resilient sheet with a warm brown granular structure. The material feels soft, can be slightly compressed, and is less rigid than wood or fiberboard.

What is it suitable for? Cork can be used for coasters, pinboards, inlays, protective layers, packaging inserts, models, and decorative interior components. Its resilience and damping properties are particularly useful when a hard sheet material is not desired.

When designing. Avoid very narrow details, sharp internal corners, and parts that will be heavily loaded: the granular structure can crumble with fine shapes. Also, consider its limited rigidity and choose sufficiently wide connections.

For laser cutting and engraving. Clear black soot residue appears along the cut edge, which may also be visible on the top and bottom surfaces. Line and area engravings turn dark. Protective film does not adhere well to the porous surface and is therefore not reliable protection.

Finishing and maintenance. Loose soot can be carefully removed dry. Cork can be cut, drilled, and glued, but handle fine edges with care. Use the material indoors and avoid prolonged stress or moisture.
