Poplar plywood

What is this material? Poplar plywood is made up of light, soft layers of poplar veneer. It weighs less than birch plywood and has a calm, light-colored wood appearance. However, it is less hard and strong.

What is it suitable for? A practical choice for lightweight kits, prototypes, models, packaging, decoration, and other indoor projects where low weight and efficient material use are more important than maximum strength.

When designing. Take into account the actual panel thickness for fittings and connections. Thin parts and shapes perpendicular to the grain can break more easily than with birch plywood. Indicate an important grain direction in advance.

When laser cutting and engraving. Due to its low density, poplar plywood can be laser cut efficiently. The cut edges and engravings turn brown to black. With thicker panels, the edge may lightly rub off and smoke residue may occur around the cut. Protective film can limit smoke residue on the surface.

Finishing and maintenance. The material can be sanded, glued, painted, varnished, or oiled. Protect it from moisture and use it indoors. A finish helps against dirt and signs of wear, but does not automatically make the panel suitable for outdoor use.
