EVA foam

What is this material?EVA is a flexible, closed-cell foam with a fine structure. It has an almost rubbery feel, is resilient, and absorbs very little water. The sheets are off-white and available in multiple thicknesses.

What is it suitable for?EVA is well-suited for protective layers, dampers, costumes and props, rough models, and decorative shapes. It is particularly useful when a component needs to be light, flexible, and somewhat shock-absorbent.

When designing.For thick foam, account for a wider cut and avoid details smaller than approximately 5 mm. Due to stretch and compression, a relaxed part may deviate slightly from the drawn dimensions. EVA is not intended as a rigid or load-bearing construction material.

When laser cutting and engraving.The cut edge generally remains clean and becomes slightly darker than the surface. Engravings become relatively deep and feel harder due to localized melting. Small dark spots or laser bed flashback may be visible on the underside.

Finishing and maintenance.EVA can be provided with double-sided adhesive film. Protective film is not possible. You can trim the material with a sharp knife or hot knife, bond it with a suitable contact adhesive, shape it, sand it, or paint it. Always test paint, glue, and heat on a scrap piece first.
