Corrugated cardboard

What is this material? 3mm corrugated cardboard consists of two brown outer layers with a corrugated core in between. This structure makes the board light and relatively rigid for its weight, but less massive and precise than solid board.

What is it suitable for? A practical choice for prototypes, packaging models, temporary displays, promotional items, and light 3D models. The material is particularly attractive when speed, low weight, and simple construction are important.

When designing. The direction of the corrugation and fluting affects stiffness and the visible edge. Avoid very small details and narrow stressed parts. Line engraving can be deeper in places, and area engraving does not produce an even result due to the corrugated core.

When laser cutting and engraving. Corrugated cardboard is cut quickly. The cut edge may scorch slightly or release a small amount of soot, but is generally less affected than with solid cardboard. Protective film is not possible with corrugated cardboard.

Finishing and maintenance. Loose soot can be removed with a dry cloth or air, and parts can be glued. Keep the board dry: moisture reduces strength and can deform the outer layers or the corrugated structure.
