An Illustrator design can look right while still containing objects the laser cutter does not use. Examples include images, editable text or masks hiding part of a shape. Make a production copy so you can continue editing the original.
Start with the final dimensions
Use millimetres and draw at actual size. Select the part and check its width and height. The artboard is not automatically a material sheet: only add a frame if you want it cut.
Prepare text and shapes
Select the required text and choose Type > Create Outlines. The letters now consist of paths. Check the internal contours of letters such as A and O.
The laser follows the vector path, not the visible thickness of a brush or stroke. If you want to engrave the filled shape of a broad letter, its boundaries must be real outlines. For area engraving, give the closed shape a line colour and assign area engraving after upload.
Remove presentation-only content
Remove photos, shadows, dimensions and hidden objects from the production version. A clipping mask does not remove the geometry behind it. Create the actual shape you want to produce and use outline view to check for extra paths.
Save and inspect the result
AI, EPS, SVG and PDF can work when the export preserves vector content. Reopen the export, then upload it. Compare dimensions, letter shapes and openings before assigning operations by colour.
