Choosing MDF or plywood for laser work

Compare MDF and plywood in terms of appearance, construction, weight, edge finishing, and the use of your component.

MDF and plywood are both well-suited for laser cutting, but yield different types of parts. MDF has a smooth surface and a homogeneous core. Plywood consists of cross-bonded wood layers and shows a visible layer structure at the edge.

Choose MDF for a calm and even surface

MDF is a logical choice for models, molds, stencils, and parts that will be painted later. The material has no visible wood grain and is uniform across its surface. The cut edge becomes dark and does not have the same smooth appearance as the surface.

In cases of moisture, intensive mechanical stress, or an application where low weight is important, regular MDF is not automatically the best choice. Check the properties of the specific MDF product.

Choose plywood for visible work and structural parts

Plywood has a natural wood appearance and, due to its layered structure, is often attractive for assembly kits, displays, and parts that remain visible. Wood type, number of layers, and board quality determine weight, stiffness, and appearance.

Because wood is a natural product, color, grain, tension, and local irregularities can vary. Keep this in mind when multiple panels together form a single visible product.

Engraving and finishing

Both materials can be engraved with line or fill engraving. The contrast depends on the material, fiber, panel, and settings. MDF generally provides a more uniform image; plywood retains more natural variation.

Test what is important for your design

Don't just look at the photo. Compare the available thicknesses, weight, edge, and surface. Order a material sample if appearance is important. For a critical joint or fit, you need a test part from the chosen thickness.
