Hardboard

What is this material? Hardboard is a thin, hard fiberboard made of wood fibers pressed together under high pressure. The board is brown, has a smooth surface on both sides, and a higher density than many other fiberboards.

What is it suitable for? A practical choice for prototypes, back panels, cover plates, packaging, templates, and other flat indoor applications where a thin and affordable board is sufficient.

When designing. Hardboard is primarily intended for flat parts without heavy mechanical loads. Keep narrow shapes and connections sufficiently wide and do not use it as a load-bearing construction material.

When laser cutting and engraving. The laser creates a dark to black cutting edge. Black smoke residue may remain on and around the cut, which hardly rubs off. Protective film limits residue on the surface.

Finishing and maintenance. Hardboard can be sanded, glued, and painted. Consider the moisture absorption of the fiberboard and use appropriate primers when painting. Use the material dry and indoors.
