Building a 3D model from laser-cut layers

Design a relief, terrain model, or three-dimensional shape by stacking flat laser-cut parts.

A laser cutter makes flat parts. By stacking multiple layers, you can still build a three-dimensional model, such as a terrain model, scale model, relief, or product shape.

Start with the layer setup

Divide the model into cross-sections with a fixed or deliberately chosen step height. The material thickness determines how many layers you need and how pronounced the height difference will be. Check the actual available thickness on the material page before fully developing the entire model.

Make each layer identifiable

Give layers a sequential number and add small alignment marks or locator holes where necessary. Place marks out of sight or design them as part of the construction. Take into account the direction in which wood veneer or a surface texture should remain visible.

Design for assembly

Determine in advance whether the layers will be glued, clamped, or aligned with pins. A fit that appears exact on screen may turn out differently due to material thickness and cut width. Therefore, first test a small section with the same joint and material.

Create a production file

Supply the layers at actual size as AI, EPS, DXF, SVG, or PDF with usable vector lines. Only use the lines that actually need to be cut or engraved and check after uploading whether each layer has been fully recognized.

Order a test first

A single cross-section or small stack quickly shows whether the level of detail, material, and fit are correct. Only then adjust the complete model or series. This prevents a small design error from appearing in every layer.
