Laser Cutting: How it Works, Possibilities, and Ordering

Laser cutting produces precise two-dimensional parts from sheet metal. Read about the technique, suitable materials, and how to order online.

Veelgestelde vragen over lasersnijden. - Het Laser Lokaal

With laser cutting, a concentrated laser beam follows the vector lines of a digital drawing. This allows flat parts to be accurately cut from sheet material, without the need for a separate mold for each shape.

What can you make with it?

Laser cutting is used for, among other things, technical parts, enclosures, displays, logos, packaging inlays, models, kits, and wall decoration. The same design can be produced as a single piece, a test model, or in series.

The laser creates two-dimensional shapes. Multiple flat parts can then together form a three-dimensional product, for example, with finger, click, or press connections.

Combining cutting and engraving

A laser cutting job can include line engraving and area engraving in addition to cutting lines. Line engraving follows a thin vector line; area engraving fills a closed shape. Product engraving on an existing object is a separate process that is assessed in advance.

Which materials does Het Laser Lokaal process?

The assortment includes plywood, MDF, acrylic, engineering plastics, foam, rubber, cardboard, paper, and felt. Not every material or thickness is suitable. We do not process PVC and vinyl-containing materials, and we do not cut metal.

Before designing, check the material page for properties, available thicknesses, and limitations. If in doubt, you can order material samples.

Which file do you need?

For online ordering, use a production-ready AI, EPS, DXF, SVG, or PDF file at actual size in millimeters. JPG and PNG files are not production drawings; with SVG and PDF, the vector content determines whether the file is usable. Text must be converted to outlines and only visible vector lines will be produced.

How online ordering works

  1. Upload your file.
  2. Check which lines and shapes have been recognized.
  3. Choose material, thickness, processes, and quantity.
  4. View the current price and delivery time.
  5. Complete the order or download a quote to order later.

A correctable file error does not require a manual quote. Adjust the file and re-upload the corrected version. Only work outside the normal portal rules requires assessment.
