Plywood consists of cross-glued layers of wood. This makes it stronger and more dimensionally stable than a solid plate of comparable thickness, while the layered cutting edge remains visible. The material is suitable for technical parts, construction kits, models, displays and other flat products.
Compare birch, poplar, linden and okoume
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong, stiff and has a nice, quiet top layer. It is a logical choice for load-bearing parts, precise connections and products where the plate itself remains visible.
Poplar plywood
Poplar plywood is lightweight and usually cuts quietly. It fits well with larger parts, models, displays and flatpack designs where weight is more important than maximum stiffness.
Linden plywood
Linden plywood has a light appearance and a fine grain. As a result, it is often used for models, fine visual work and parts with small details.
Okoume plywood
Okoume is light and has a warmer wood color. The exact plate structure and visual quality may differ per version; therefore always check the product information of the chosen variant.
Cutting edge, engraving and fitting
The laser darkens the cut edge and may leave light smoke trails around the cut. Adhesive layers, knots and differences in panel structure influence the result. For a visible engraving or critical fit, a test part in the same wood type and thickness is wise.
Design connections based on the actual sheet thickness. Sheet material always has thickness tolerance and the laser cut removes material. Therefore also read Choose MDF or plywood, compare birch, poplar or linden and the drawing rules.
