Birch, poplar, and lime are not three colors of the same material. The type of wood and panel construction influence weight, appearance, stiffness, fine details, and the visible cut edge.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is a sturdy and relatively compact starting point for components, enclosures, menus, and constructions where the panel and layered edge can remain visible. The higher weight can be pleasant for a stable display but less convenient for a large flatpack or lightweight assembly kit.
Poplar plywood
Poplar plywood is lightweight, making it attractive for larger components, displays, and assembly kits that are transported compactly. The surface is typically calm and light in color. For heavily loaded, small connections, low weight alone is not a sufficient reason to choose this material; test the construction in the desired thickness.
Lime plywood
Lime plywood is often chosen for fine model work and components where a light wood color and neat detailing are important. Assess for each product which thicknesses are available and whether the stiffness matches the size of your component.
Which type suits your design?
- Choose by weight when the product is carried, shipped, or delivered as a flatpack.
- Choose by stiffness and panel construction when components have a structural function.
- Choose by surface and edge when the material remains visible.
- Always test a critical fit with the same wood type and thickness as the final production.
Plywood remains a natural product. A material sample helps with color and surface; only a test component will show how your dimensions, connection, and engraving turn out.
